This client needed to create a more robust site with search engine visibility, not just in their home city, but in a total of five cities. The project team included the client, a freelance designer, a freelance copywriter, a programmer and RefreshWeb. Our free website SEO report showed very limited visibility, even on local terms where the client is well known.
After learning about their business objectives and more about the markets they wished to serve, and studying the search characteristics of the statewide market, we prepared our detailed SEO analysis, competitive overview and site performance audit. In the site optimization plan, we proposed a site architecture to build up the organization's strengths: creating a subdomain for each city meant the search engines would see five different websites, with the opportunity to rank well for terms specific to each city. The site was completely redesigned, with customized content targeting a wide range of search terms, working closely with each team member to integrate our search strategy.
This was an ambitious project for the client. A relatively small company, creating a website that would compete well in five different target cities essentially meant creating content for five websites. The designer was flexible in creating searchable headlines, and the copywriter was very patient in what felt like redoing the project several times. As a result of the scope, it took about a year to create the site, but just a couple of months to see the dramatic improvement in rankings on a couple dozen search terms.
